The National Science Foundation (NSF) has announced a $110 million, five-year award to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and 18 partner institutions, including the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California San Diego, to continue and expand the agency’s Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) program.

This month’s announcement by the National Science Foundation that scientists for the first time detected gravitational waves in the universe as hypothesized by Albert Einstein 100 years ago has opened up a new era of exploration for astronomers and astrophysicists. The NSF-funded Comet supercomputer at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego, which went into operation in May 2015, was one of several high-performance computers used by researchers to help confirm that landmark discovery before a formal announcement was made.

Intel has opened a second parallel computing center at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), at the University of California, San Diego. The focus of this new engagement is on earthquake research, including detailed computer simulations of major seismic activity that can be used to better inform and assist disaster recovery and relief efforts.
